Actor, producer and candidate Chris Mitchum remained optimistic as he watched returns with dozens of volunteers at The Set bar in the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort.
Hotel visitors recognized the son of late actor Robert Mitchum who gladly posed for pictures.
Mitchum joked that he could have easily won in a Texas where he owns property. But the self-described Reagan Republican said he would rather create change in the district he calls home.
Campaign workers said they were proud Mitchum made a better showing than U.S. Rep. Lois Capps’ last challenger.
Early returns showed Capps with 51% of the votes and Mitchum with 48%.
Mitchum gained some ground by 11 p.m. but he was hoping voter turnout would turn things around.Congress District 24 Coast, S. Barbara, SLO
