The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is mourning the death of Deputy Eugene Kostiuchenko. The 41-year-old was killed Tuesday morning after being stuck by a vehicle during a traffic stop in Camarillo.

Officials say Kostiuchenko was standing near the Lewis Road exit of the 101 when he was struck by a passing car around 1:15 a.m. The driver fled the scene and was involved in a single-car crash at Las Posas Road minutes later, officials say.

The CHP has identified the driver of the hit-and-run as 25-year-old Kevin Hogrefe, of Camarillo. He was booked for felony DUI, felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter

Kostiuchenko was an 11-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, and is survived by his wife and two sons.
