Persona Pizzeria Awards One Customer With Pizza for a Year

A Santa Barbara downtown worker got quite the surprise when she was showered with confetti inside a restaurant. Megan Monroe was customer number 250,000 at Persona Neapolitan Pizzeria this afternoon and won a grand prize.

The owners have been tracking the numbers and estimated the winner would come in sometime after 1 p.m. They were right.

Monroe had no idea except that she thought many people were looking at her while she was going through the ordering process.

At the register, “boom they blew off a confetti rocket,” said Monroe. “And everyone was shaking my hand, I thought it was a practical joke, ‘am I on candid camera?'”

Monroe now receives a pizza a week of her choice for the next year.

It works well for her because, “I just started a new internship with Davies Communications,” she said, which is located across the street.

Monroe has been in the restaurant before, but now she will be a regular customer.

Persona owner Joe Baumel says the restaurant has had strong business since it opened in February of last year. He sees a mix of downtown workers, visitors looking for casual dining, and students from the nearby international schools.

The concept involves signature pizzas, or a “pick your own topping bar” for customers that want to customize their meal. Many of the ingredients are locally sources and Persona says the meatballs, sausage and sauces have all won gold medal awards. The thin crusts are baked quickly in a wood fire oven and served within moments.

The concept is now going to be franchised.
