18.2 Million Participate in Earthquake Drill

If you saw people take cover Thursday morning they were probably participating in the Great Shakeout. More than 18.2 million people dropped, covered and held on for the drill. It was all part of the Great Shakeout drill that happened at 10:16 Thursday morning.

More than 30 states and several countries participated. The drill is organized to inspire people to get ready for big earthquakes and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.

“So the more you do it the more it just comes naturally so that’s what we want people to do. We want people when they feel the shaking to just automatically go under a table or desk or just any place that will provide cover,” said Oxnard Fire Department’s Disaster Preparedness Coordinator Susan Duenas.

This year’s Great Shakeout was the biggest earthquake drill ever.
