Bicyclist Killed After Hit And Run

A man died Wednesday morning after getting hit by a car while riding his bike in Arroyo Grande near the intersection of Los Berros and Pomeroy Road.

Kari Barragan was inside her home with her daughter when she heard sirens going off. She tells KEYT/KCOY/KKFX’S Cory James that she and her daughter came out of their home and “looked down the street and noticed something bad had happened.”

Witnesses said the man was hit so hard his bike flew across the street.

CHP says a man on his bicycle was traveling southbound on Los Berros Road after 11:00 a.m. when a Honda Accord hit him.

Officers say the driver, 45-year old Michelle Hart, did not stop and took off.

Law enforcement say Hart later abandoned the car a short distance away from the scene, but with the help of a witness, an officer was able to locate and arrest Hart on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI.

Nearby residents who live in this area said the stretch of road where the accident occurred is often abused by drivers who speed.

CHP is trying to identify the bicyclist, who was not carrying identification.
