Goleta Shoplifting Suspects Caught after Chase

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies called in a helicopter and chased two suspects on foot after a shoplifting incident at the Kmart in Goleta Monday afternoon.

The suspects ran from a deputy which was when the additional resources were called in.

One of the suspects, a 17-year-old, was caught in the nearby Chevron gas station parking lot.

The second was found after an extensive search of the area. He was located in a nearby parking lot of a large business.

The two were accused of taking fishing supplies from the store.

A deputy on scene said one of the suspects, Steven Edward Hayes, was enrolled at Santa Barbara City College. An SBCC spokeswoman later said Hayes was a former student but not currently enrolled.
