Bikes Replacing Parking Spots on One Santa Barbara Street

Two parking spots have been eliminated and new bike racks have gone in on Canon Perdido Street in downtown Santa Barbara.

The idea was suggested months ago, and went through extensive review by city planners, transportation officials and the public works department.

The two parking spots now have a white border, and inside large green metal rings for bike riders to lock up their wheels.

One rider Will Warner said this type of rack is popular in Portland and the Bay area. “Like a ton of places in San Francisco have verticle bike racks, and bike racks indoors. It makes it more accessible for people biking around who say ‘oh a bike rack’ I don’t have to smash my frame into a gigantic steel pole.”

Local business owners including Three Pickles Deli, Handlebars Coffee, The Sojourner Cafe, C’est Cheese and Julienne Restaurant all supported the idea.
