Customers Concerned About Home Depot Hacking Investigation

Customers said they were concerned about their credit card use at Home Depot following a report that the retail giant may have been hacked in the Spring.

Cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs reported a similar hacking problem at Target last year.

Krebs said this one could be much larger. He said a massive amount of credit card and debit card numbers that may be linked to the Home Depot went on sale on the black market Tuesday.

Handyman Mark Nelson said he will still shop at the store in Goleta. He said he has two Home Depot credit cards.

But other customers including Don Douglas of Don Douglas Construction said he may think twice. Douglas hope the retailer will consider using credit cards with chips rather than magnetic strips.

Banks and stores in England started using chip cards six years ago and saw a drop in fraud cases. The chip cards don’t use a one-time code that is not easily copied.

The Atlanta based home improvement store said it will notify customers of the breach if it is confirmed.

Information stolen from magnetic strips can be used to create counterfeit credit and debit cards or used to make purchases online.

Pamela Andrews said she will contact her bank and consider getting new credit card numbers.
