Cabrillo Pavilion and Bathhouse Project Presented to Public for Comments

Santa Barbara’s landmark Cabrillo Pavilion and Bathhouse along with the East Beach Grill are in for a new look.

A public hearing tonight will unveil drawings and plans to upgrade the building as a renewed full service community center.

In recent years it has been a gathering place for meetings, weddings, and forums along with the classic gym and waterfront fitness facility known by volleyball players and swimmers for years.

Past pictures of the site show many people in and around the property and years ago there was a swimming pool in front of the building with a circular slide.

The East Beach Grill restaurant is one of the few places in Santa Barbara were you can dine just steps from the sand.

One recommendation is to turn the walkway in front of the famous building into more of a classic beach wooden boardwalk.

The project still needs to go through more city reviews and changes are still a few years off.

The estimated cost will be about $14 million. Most of the money, $9 million is set aside from what was once the Redevelopment Agency, and those dollars were left with the city during the recession at a time when the state was taking back similar money that was not yet earmarked for a project.

Members of the public that have an interest in the building and its activities include historians, event planners, and civic groups.
