Funding for Pismo Preserve is Complete
Hikers and cyclists in the area have something special to look forward to next year. Funding for the 900-acre Pismo Preserve is officially complete and now the group behind the project will enter into an agreement to purchase the land.
The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County has worked to collect the money needed to buy the land that will be the Pismo Preserve. The Land Conservancy will sign the $12-million purchase agreement next month and plans to open the preserve to the public next summer.
The California Wildlife Conservation Board approved the last $4-million that were needed on Thursday. Earlier this week the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors pitched in an additional $400,000. Several private donors gave $15,000.
In all, $8-million of funding came from the state level. The rest came from local government funding and other private donations.
The 900-acres of undeveloped land above Shell and Pismo beach have 10 miles of trails ready to use.
The fundraising isn’t over just yet though. The Land Conservancy is still trying to raise another $15,000 to build a parking lot and for other costs to make sure the land is ready for public use.
