Measure S Backers Send Message on SBCC First Day

Students at Santa Barbara City College headed back to class on Monday for the first day of the fall semester. As they arrived on campus, they were greeted by an organized effort in support of ballot “Measure S,” a $288 million bond measure.

At a midday news conference, elected leaders including Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal and Santa Barbara Councilman Gregg Hart will speak in favor of the measure.

If approved by voters, the money would grant the College the right to use funds for building improvements including the Main Library. Other SBCC facilities impacted include Occupational Education with programs such as Nursing and Automotive, and the Marine Diving Technology building.

Opponents have pointed to a large number of non-local students who attend SBCC, while the bond measure would be shouldered only by local taxpayers.
