5-year-old Boy Killed By Driverless SUV

A Guadalupe family is mourning the loss of a 5-year old boy killed after an SUV ran over him.

The accident happened Wednesday just before 6 p.m. on the 4400 block of Fir Street.

Guadalupe Police say the mother left the SUV unattended to run inside when it rolled forward and ran over the child.

Patricia Arjona lives two houses down from where the accident happened. She tells KCOY 12’s Cory James that she was “waiting for feet to move … waiting for him to do something … but he was just so gone.”

Arjona, a mother of four, said watching rescue workers trying to save the little boy’s life reminded her how important it is to hold her kids close.

Guadalupe Police and Fire Departments removed him from under the SUV and rushed him to Marian Regional Medical Center where he later died.

Officials say the car may have malfunctioned, but it did have a black box that will allow them to gather information about the vehicle at the time of the crash. That includes engine speed, gear section and more.

The crash is under investigation.
