Santa Maria Library Looking to Change Restrictions of Personal Items
The Santa Maria Public Library is looking to restrict the size of personal items visitors can bring into their building.
The library has asked the city to change their municipal Code of Conduct to help enforce safety rules.
The new rule would require all items to be able to fit under a chair.
Parents will still be allowed to bring in strollers for children.
Employees are concerned with tripping hazards, and want to limit the space people take up with large items.
Santa Maria Librarian Mary Housel said, “Currently we don’t have any restrictions on anything, so people can bring bikes in and shopping carts. So this will put a rule into place that we will be able to enforce.”
The library also wants to change the “three strike” rule for disruptive library visitors.
The change would allow staff to ban anyone they believe is unruly or inappropriate
If the city passes these changes, they would go into effect mid-September.
