2015 Ford Edge gets new style, technology

Ford introduced an all-new Edge compact SUV recently, replacing the previous model which has been around since 2006.

The new Edge boasts an all-new exterior design that blends cues from the previous model and incorporates details similar to other modern Fords, like a taillight design that echoes that of the Fusion sedan.

However, the changes are not just skin-deep. “The all-new Edge has been remade in almost every single detail, always keeping in mind the customer, who expects something premium, powerful and special,” said Judy Curran, vehicle line director for Ford.

Among the changes is a redesigned suspension that is supposed to reduce noise without compromising handling. The new body structure is also much stiffer than the previous car, which also improves handling and reduces harshness.

Technological improvements include features like adaptive steering, which adjusts the ratio between the steering wheel movement and the tire movement depending on the speed of the car. At lower speeds, the tires will move more to help maneuverability. At higher speeds, the tires move less to maintain stability.

Other convenient technologies include active grill shutters to help manage airflow, adaptive cruise control that adjusts the speed when traffic slows down and an engine that automatically shuts off when the car is stopped, and quickly turns on again when it’s time to move.

A major convenience that Ford first showed on the Escape SUV is the ability to open the rear door by waving a foot under the back bumper. This way, you don’t have to fumble with keys and door handles when your hands are full.

Inside the car, the driver and passengers will find a little more space to move around. Legroom in the front row is up nearly 2 inches, and up 1 inch for rear-seat passengers. Headroom is also up an inch throughout.

The dashboard and interior panels have been redesigned to give a more streamlined look. There’s even an available panoramic sunroof that stretches nearly four feet from front to back.

Three engine choices will be available in the 2015 Edge. There’s a 2-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that generates 245 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a 3.5-liter V6 that essentially carries over from the current model. At the top of the line, there’s an all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that’s expected to deliver more than 300 horsepower.

The new Edge will go on sale in the first part of 2015 and Ford plans to sell the car in more than 100 markets around the world.
