Laguna Lake is Drying Quickly

The City of San Luis Obispo’s Natural Resources program is bringing forward a conservation plan for city council approval next Tuesday.

City natural resources manager, Robert Hill, said the primary objective is to protect the natural resources around the lake and improve access to the lake for recreational use.

Laguna Lake is a naturally occurring lake, while portions of it are man made.

Hill said “We’ve been working on the plan over the last 2 years.” He added the lake drying now is a timely coincidence.

Laguna lake has experience drying like it is currently once in 1977 and in 1991, but in 1969 and 1973 the lake experienced flooding.

Hill predicts the lake would be mostly dry by late summer.

Hill said the city can’t do much about the lake drying now because it’s a costly and complex permitting project.

They’ll present the conservation plan to the City Council on Tuesday July 15.
