Goleta Teen Competes in Online Technical Scholarship Contest
A Goleta teen is looking for some horsepower in his drive to be an auto technician. Andy Jacobs is currently in an online contest for a scholarship to the Universal Technical Institute (UTI).
He’s created a video, and it’s currently number seven in the competition. He says there are over 500 entries. It’s being promoted by Mike Rowe of the Discovery Channel show, “Dirty Jobs.”
At age 18, Jacobs has overcome setbacks including two back surgeries but he says he is ready to take on the challenges ahead.
What he really wants, is to be a good, friendly neighborhood mechanic, and help people.
“I would try to be as honest as I can as a technician and try to help people,” said Jacobs. “Most people don’t like dealing with car troubles and I will help them with their cars in the best possible manner.”
If he wins the scholarship, he would get $32,000 for the full year of schooling.
He will learn many aspects of automotive repair, but ultimately wants to lean towards diesel engines.
