Coroner Releases Findings in Death of UCSB Student

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released the coroner’s findings after investigating the death of a 20-year-old University of California Santa Barbara student.

It happened early in the morning of May fourth.

Sierra Cheyenne Markee-Winkler’s body was found just after 7:00 a.m. on the sand off the 68-hundred block of Del Playa Drive, right below Look Out Park in Isla Vista.

The coroner found the Eureka woman suffered numerous bruises and abrasions after accidentally falling from the cliffs, but indicated there were no signs of physical or sexual assault on Markee-Winkler’s body and no visible traumatic injuries.

Authorities have documented six similar deaths dating back to 2001.

Santa Barbara County and UCSB are currently working together to improve protective fencing along sections of the dangerous cliffs in Isla Vista.
