Ventura City Council Appoints New City Attorney

The Ventura City Council has announced a new city attorney. Gregory Diaz will be replacing Ariel Calonne.

Calonne resigned from his position in March after serving for 7 years on the position.

Diaz served as city attorney for the city of Merced since 2001. He received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Public Administration and Political Science from California State University of Long Beach. He received his law degree from Western State University.

Mayor Cheryl Heitmann said, “We are impressed with his [Diaz] emphasis on solving problems in a collaborative manner with staff, council and the community. I am sure he [Diaz] will be a great addition to our organization and our community.”

The position of city attorney is appointed and approved by the city council. It’s purpose is to serve as the chief legal advisor to the city council, city manager, and all city departments.
