Ring in the New Year Locally

New Year’s Eve is the biggest party day of the year and with 24 hours to go, preparations are already underway for many local businesses. For those who still don’t have plans to ring in 2014, it’s not too late.

For all you local party-goers, you won’t need to travel far to have a good time this New Year’s Eve.

“We will have this bar open with a full crew of four bartenders, as well as our back bar, with one bartender, and we will have DJ music,” said Lincoln White, a bartender at Rooney’s Irish Pub.

Lincoln White works at Rooney’s Irish Pub in Old Orcutt and says New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year and expects Tuesday night to be no different.

“A couple hundred, easily. We get a cross section of everybody. Everybody is usually out in the town. All different age groups are out here and its usually a very good time,” said White.

In Santa Maria, the Radisson Hotel will be hosting a dinner and dance to welcome in 2014. The Santa Maria Inn will also have a buffet dinner. The party doesn’t stop in San Luis Obispo County as the Madonna Inn will have dinner and dancing, as well as a big party at the Cliffs Resort in Shell Beach.

No matter what you’re doing to celebrate, law enforcement reminds you if you do drink, be smart and plan ahead; designate a driver or call a cab.

“The shifts are staffed at full capacity and those officers are out there looking for drunk drivers. Those are things that we traditionally know occur on those evenings and they’re out there looking for them,” said Sergeant Russell Mengal, Santa Maria Police Department.

AAA offers its “Tipsy Tow” service to anyone who needs a ride on New Years’ Eve from 6:00p.m. Tuesday until 6:00a.m. Wednesday. The first 10 miles are free and a membership is not required.
