UPS Makes Holiday Deliveries On Bikes

The mailman comes, rain or shine. And so does the United Parcel Service delivery truck — and its bikes.

UPS has added two wheels to its fleet of brown vans, for a fourth year.

Twenty five temporary workers are delivering packages on bikes, from Carpinteria to Santa Maria, helping with the overflow of packages this holiday season, up 50-percent.

The majority of packages delivered by bike are in high density communities such as mobile home parks or retirement areas.

“People are surprised. They go, ‘But i didn’t hear the truck!’ Their response is overwhelmingly positive,” said Elliot Feinberg.

UPS expects to handle 30,000 packages locally each day from Santa Barbara to Santa Maria, through the holiday season.
