San Luis Obispo Police officers are investigating after a Cal Poly student football coach was was shot during what they believe was a drug deal. The incident happened inside a home Thursday at 7:45 p.m. on the 400 block of Buena Vista Ave.

The shooting victim is identified as 22-year-old Geoffrey Hyde who was shot in the back. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Hyde was listed as a student football coach and offensive lineman football player on the Cal Poly website.

San Luis Obispo Police investigators were called in to investigate this crime and secured a search warrant for the residence.

During the course of this investigation it was discovered two suspects entered the residence possibly to complete a drug transaction involving prescription medication.

Police said one suspects is described as a male black in his 20’s, approximately 6’0″ tall with a lanky build, wearing a gray “South Pole” sweatshirt and jeans.

The other suspect is described as a male Hispanic in his 20’s, 5’6″ tall with a “chubby build” and short hair. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans.

Investigators believe that Hyde and one of the suspects became involved in a physical altercation which lead to Hyde being shot in the back.

Immediately after the shooting both suspects ran out of the residence and fled in an unknown direction. It is believed they fled in a vehicle but we have not confirmed a description of the vehicle.
