Cal Poly Student Dies After Jumping in a River in Spain

Matthew Yount was a business student at Cal Poly and a member of the golf team, and just after the summer he left for Spain to study abroad.

According to the Spanish newspaper Diario de Sevilla, Yount and two friends were parting one night when on their way home they decided to jump off a bridge in a river where the water was about 45 degrees. The newspaper also says that one of the swimmers was taken to the hospital for hypothermia.

It took divers several hours before they could find Yount’s body. The cause of death is still unknown.

Yount’s friends and teammates wore blue ribbons the day after finding out about his death to honor him in a golf tournament.

Cal Poly plans to hold a candlelight vigil for Yount after Thanksgiving.
