Parolee Sought in Stabbing and Chase Arrested

A man on parole was arrested at a home in Santa Maria Thursday, sought after he escaped law enforcement during a high speed car chase and foot pursuit that ended in Grover Beach November 7.

Osvaldo Hernandez, 39, was linked to the stabbing and robbery of a Nipomo man early in the morning on November 6. The victim was inside a vehicle on the Chumash Indian Reservation when he was stabbed several times and his wallet and cell phone were taken. The victim was left on the roadway and managed to get to the main lobby of the Chumash casino to seek help. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Hernandez tried to elude deputies Thursday morning as they searched a home in Santa Maria. He ran out into the back yard, but deputies had guns drawn and were able to arrest him.

Hernandez was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, a gang enhancement, kidnapping and attempted homicide. He was on parole for resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon. Hernandez bail was set at $1 million.

On November 7, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies spotted Hernandez driving in a vehicle on East Donovan Road in Santa Maria. Cherie Rodriguez, 29 was a passenger in the car. As deputies attempted to pull Hernandez over he sped away, starting a high speed chase that went up and down Highway 101 with speeds reaching 100 miles per hour.

Officers broke off pursuit when Hernandez’ vehicle exited the freeway at 4th Avenue in Grover Beach. The vehicle slammed into a parked car at 4th Avenue and Park View. The vehicle was then abandoned at 6th Avenue and Park View.

A foot chase from that location led to the capture and arrest of Rodriguez. She was charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
