Third Case of Meningitis Confirmed at UC Santa Barbara Campus

Health officials say there’s another confirmed case of meningitis on the University of California, Santa Barbara campus.

Santa Barbara County Public Health Department spokeswoman Susan Klein-Rothschild said Thursday a third case was recently confirmed. No other details were immediately available.

Two students were previously diagnosed with meningococcal disease, which can be spread through kissing, coughing or prolonged contact.

Symptoms can include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting.

Officials have said they don’t think the cases are related to an outbreak at Princeton University that has sickened seven people.

Earlier this week, public health and school officials urged people on campus to watch out for signs of meningitis and provided antibiotics to those who had close contact with the ill students.
