Doctor Teams up with Coaches and Parents to Talk about Concussions

Santa Barbara High teamed up with Cottage Hospital’s pediatric trauma services to raise awareness about sports-related concussions.

Stephen Kaminski, M.D. said if parents notice their young athlete acting dazed or confused, they should be concerned.

Kaminski said coaches used to rely on the athletes to say whether they would continue playing, but not anymore.

Coaches are being trained to pull players out if there is any indication an athlete may have suffered a traumatic injury.

Santa Barbara High School’s athletic director Joe Chenoweth said safety is the school’s No. 1 priority in all sports.

Kaminski said if an athlete shows signs of a concussion, the athlete should rest his or her brain, and that means taking a break from video screens, too.
