Purple Heart Trail Winds Through Area

A local stretch of highway 101 is joining the National Purple Heart Trail. State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson proposed the idea in a Senate Concurrent Resolution that passed without debate. Monday, Jackson, Assemblymember Das Williams, Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal
and Commander Michael Cook with Chapter 750 of Military Order of the Purple Heart met in Carpinteria.

Together they unveiled a Purple Heart Trail sign along Rincon State Beach in Carpinteria. The trail now runs along the 101, through Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, joining the 240-mile National Purple Heart Trail extending to Monterey County. Purple Heart Trail signs will eventually be placed at various locations along the highway. The trail is named after the Purple Heart award honoring troops wounded or killed while serving in the military. “I can’t think of a more fitting day than Veterans Day for us to unveil this extension of the Purple Heart Trail,” said Jackson. “This is an important way to honor those men and women who made great sacrifices, and in some cases, the ultimate sacrifice, for our country.”
