Starbucks to hire 10,000 veterans

Starbucks is looking for a few good men and women. The Seattle coffee giant is now the latest company to announce an aggressive push to hire veterans returning to work outside the military.

Starbucks has pledged to hire 10,000 veterans or their military spouses over the next five-years. The goal is to tackle the high unemployment rate among veterans.

The jobs include working in Starbucks coffee stores, production warehouses and management positions. Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz says it’s the right thing to do in response to critics who say this is all a PR move to sell more coffee.

Several other major U.S. businesses made similar pushes. Walmart has said it will hire 100,000 veterans by 2018. Home Depot pledged to hire 10,000 more employees this year than in 2012.

NewsChannel 3 Anchor Shirin Rajaee spoke with Charles Fuqua, a U.S. Navy veteran living in Santa Barbara. Fuqua has his associates of arts degree and is studying at Santa Barbara City College. He’s volunteering at the Veteran’s Memorial Building on Cabrillo Blvd as he actively searches for a job. He says he’s hoping to land an opportunity that will allow him to grow and follow the American dream.
