State St. Pianos Appear for the Public to Play Freestyle Shows

Beautiful music, from artistically painted pianos, can now be heard on State St. in Santa Barbara.

It’s part of the “Pianos on State “ project. They will be out on several blocks downtown through October 21 in coordination with the New Noise festival.

One of the first persons to sit down and play was Santa Barbara City College student Matt Smith. As a child in New York, he took two years of lessons. Then he taught himself songs he enjoyed.

“It’s awesome to come out and play for people,” said Smith. And he plans to play every public piano he can find. “They’re all different. All these pianos have been donated so they had to have repairs. Some keys might have been missing. So I am going to go around and find different ones you will see me there.”

Last year the young and old could be found on the keyboards.

Some professionals also gave impromptu concerts.
