Deputy-Involved Shooting Near Carpinteria Leaves Man in Critical Condition

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a deputy involved shooting. It happened Sunday night off Padaro Lane in an unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County outside the Carpinteria city limits.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call in the 3200 block of Beach Club Drive of a possible trespasser around 7:45 p.m.

During the investigation, and after a suspect was inside a patrol vehicle, a deputy saw the vehicle moving and opened fire hitting the suspect. Investigators say the man inside the back seat was able to break out a plexiglas divider and get into the front of the patrol vehicles where weapons were located. The wounded person was taken to Cottage hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Neighbors witnessed the incident and told NewsChannel 3, the suspect rammed a tow truck at the scene, damaging the front left portion of the patrol car.

Tire skid marks and broken glass were on the ground at the scene.

Late this afternoon the Sheriff’s department said the suspect – who has not been identified – was in handcuffs when he was seated in the back of the patrol car.

A resident said she heard a total of four shots fired.

No sheriff’s deputies were injured in the shooting.

The patrol unit involved has a bullet hole in a door.

The investigation is ongoing.

The name of the suspect has not been released.
