California Avocado Festival Goes Green

The California Avocado Festival drew more than 100,000 people to Carpinteria this weekend.

The three-day festival is known for its green fruit, but it also known for being the greenest festival in California.

Organizers not only had crews sweeping up any trash that hit the streets, they also had special bins set up to collect food scraps, plates, plastic bottles, and anything else that festival goers might need to throw away. But instead of going in a trash can, all of these items were sorted for recycling.

Biodegradable products were placed in one bin. All the food scraps and compost items in that bin will be recycled and used at local farms.

The blue bins are transported to the Gold Coast recycling center in Ventura, and then sorted.

E.J. Harrison & Sons and Channel Island Janitorial were chosen by the festival staff because of their ability to collect, sort and recycle all the trash.

Festival organizers estimate this year they will have diverted 13 tons of trash from landfills.

The festival features hundreds of avocado items. Some of the items include guacamole, avocado oil, and even avocado ice cream.

The California Avocado Festival is also one of the largest free music festivals in California, with more than 75 acts performing on four stages.
