Mistrial in the case of accused Santa Barbara child molester

A Santa Barbara judge declares a mistrial in the case of a Montectio church employee accused of molestation. The jury was not able to decide whether to convict Carlos Ruano, after 4-days of deliberations.

For the last 7 years, Ruano worked for All Saints By the Sea Episcopal Church doing maintenance work. He is accused of lewd conduct against a minor off church grounds.

The charge stems from an alleged incident at his Santa Barbara home with his then 7-year old step granddaughter. During the trial, dozens of church members came to show their support for Ruano. Prosecutors say while they’re disappointed 3-jurors voted against conviction, they say they have a strong case.

A hung jury means the case can be retried if the prosecution decides to try again, which will be determined at a hearing next Friday. Ruano continues to remain in custody.
