UCSB Welcomes New Students
More than 62,000 students applied to UCSB, but fewer than 5,000 are in the freshman class.
Many feel like they earned it. The average grade point average is 4.13. The average SAT score: 1944.
About 95 percent of the students are moving into on-campus dorms at cost of about 1,000 per month. The Santa Catalina dorm comes with a heated pool, weight room and three meals a day.
The university did not release the percentage of out-of-state students arriving on campus, but that number makes a difference when it comes to tuition.
California students pay around $12,000 a year, while students form other states and countries pay about three times that.
Parents called it an investment. They said the university’s party reputation is outweighed by its academic reputation. UCSB is home to five Nobel prize recipients.
Speaking of parties, residence hall associates set up a luau by the pool for all the new students. There will also be ice cream socials and other social events before the fall quarter begins next Thursday.
The new students are also invited to attend a convocation ceremony at the faculty Club Green Monday afternoon.
