Wow Week Underway at Cal Poly

As freshmen students begin to arrive for their first semester at Cal Poly, organizers of “Wow Week” plan several events to welcome the incoming class.

WOW stands for “Week of Welcome,” billed as a week-long series of orientation events on and off the campus. Planners strive to give students opportunities to learn about the campus, orientation to what services and programs are available and provide a method to meet fellow students.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department will increase patrol staffing during the start of school, to include Move-In and Week of Welcome activities. Enhanced patrol deployments will be prepared to respond to the any large gatherings generated from the various WOW participants and other start of school year gatherings that often occupy the neighborhoods surrounding the Cal Poly Campus.

As part of that plan, SLO Police will team up with Cal Poly University Police for a quick response to neighborhood issues that may arise.

A philosophy called “The “Mustang Way” will be shared by police with students to encourage an atmosphere of mutual respect, responsibility for actions and appreciation for the surrounding neighborhoods. Officers have been encouraged to share the philosophy as they interact with students, neighbors and others during a period of intensified patrol and enforcement.

SLO Police will have a fully staffed deployment for WOW week and the first two weekends of school.

The WOW program is open to freshmen or new transfer students. Organizers place participants in groups of 10 to 20, led by an existing Cal Poly student, who plans activities based on the interests of students in each group.
