Santa Barbara Beach Memorial Remembers 9/11 Victims

Two thousand nine hundred and seventy-seven.

That’s the number of American flags placed on Santa Barbara’s West Beach to honor those lost on 9/11 — one flag for every victim killed on that day 12 years ago.

The field of flags is organized by Young America’s. A foundation that places flag memorials around the country to ensure Americans youth never forget Sept. 11.

“This is a nice time of reflection to really remember what happened, volunteer Amy Levitt said. “Even if were weren’t quite as old as we needed to be to appreciate it.”

The memorial on West Beach has been staged since 2003. Organizers said they’ll be back each year to remember those lost and mark the day our country changed forever.
