Smoking Areas Tabled in Carpinteria

Carpinteria considered an idea to designate smoking areas.

The city council reviewed a recommendation to put one or more smoking areas within city limits at a cost of about $4,000.

The areas proposed included parking lots on Linden Avenue, Fifth Street and Ninth Street.

But City Manager Dave Durflinger said they tabled the idea during a short meeting Monday night.

One smoking area was approved before the 2011 outdoor smoking ban. It was located near the Bluffs Trail at the request of Surf Dog owner Bill Connel.

The proposal to create designated smoking areas followed the passage of an ordinance in May to establish locations where tobacco retailers could do business.
