MTD Bus Service Cuts Canceled

The wheels on the bus will continue to roll after a dispute over Federal transit money is temporarily over.

The trouble began when the U.S. Department of Labor called the California Public Employee Pension Reform Act of 2013 incompatible with Federal labor law.

At first, the government refused to approve transit grants.

But that was resolved by Governor Jerry Brown who proposed legislation to exempt transit workers from the act while California defends it pension reform plan in court.

Last month, the Metropolitan Transit District told riders about a proposal to cut five buses and weekend service between UCSB, Santa Barbara City College and downtown.

Students and workers felts left out of the conversation and held a public forum in Isla Vista where ridership is high.

MTD buses aren’t full now, but they are expected to be when thousands of students return to campus later this month.
