Former Business Office Supervisor Sentenced to Prison

A former employee with the Santa Barbara Police Department was sentenced to state prison Friday for embezzlement.

Karen Flores wept throughout the several hour hearing as Judge George Eskin sentenced her to 10 years behind bars. She was immediately taken into custody.

The 22-year veteran supervisor embezzled more than $600,000 from the city’s parking citation fund over a span of seven years.

Flores was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of nearly $685,000 to the City of Santa Barbara, as well as nearly $113,000 to the California Franchise Tax Board.

She also loses her retirement benefits from city employment. Flores pleaded “no contest” to the charges back in June.
