Students Grade First Day of School

Children put away their sandals and put on their closed-toed shoes for the first day of school.

When it came to dressing, Bela Kochan has this advice: don’t let your mom dress you.

She wanted her outfits to show off her hip-hop style.

Her mother said the first day went well because her daughter couldn’t wait to see her friends.

But it’s not always easy for new students.

Washington Elementary School Principal Anne Hubbard shared her goals with parents at a before-school meeting.

Hubbard said they were going to focus on state standards in common core classes, such as math, English, and next-generation science.

She also urged parents and drivers to be extra cautious around children and school buses.

Parent Teacher Organization president Simon Dixon urged parents to get their children to bed early so they will be ready to learn.

If the first week is overwhelming, educators said parents can just remind students they have a three-day Labor Day weekend coming up before the next week of school.
