Athletes Participate in Santa Barbara Triathlon

The Santa Barbara Triathlon is back this weekend. On Saturday, triathlon participants took on the grueling long course. It consists of a 1-mile ocean swim, a 34-mile bike ride and a 10-mile run.

Ideal conditions made for a fast day on the course on Saturday. Emma-Kate Lidbury set a new women’s record. Her time was 3 hours, 5 minutes and 50 seconds. The overall winner, Robbie Wade of Texas, beat last year’s winning time by five minutes. Wade finished the race in 2 hours and 49 minutes flat.

On Sunday, the sprint race kicks off. It’s a 500 yard swim, followed by a 6-mile bike ride and 2-mile run.

The Santa Barbara Triathlon was established in 1981 and is one of the longest running triathlons in the world. The event also raises money for local charities selected by the community. This year some of the proceeds support the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara.
