Coast Guard stops drug smugglers near Malibu

The Los Angeles Coast Guard and Sheriff’s Department teamed up Thursday to stop two men from smuggling marijuana into California.

It happened around 7 a.m., Los Angeles County Lifeguards reported suspicious activity to authorities after spotting the fast-moving, panga-style boat off the coast of Malibu.

After a 30-minute pursuit, officials took the drug smugglers into custody with an estimated 26 bales of marijuana.

The Coast Guard Command Center responded with units from Los Angeles, San Pedro, Long Beach, Channel Islands Harbor and Oxnard.

They were also assisted by LASD officers and a helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station.
