Laundry room catches fire at Santa Maria Inn

Just after 8 p.m. Monday, Santa Maria Fire Department responded to a fire in the laundry room at the Santa Maria Inn.

Emergency responders found moderate smoke coming from the building. Officials said maintenance crews extinguished the fire before the fire department entered the room.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $20,000.

One sprinkler head was activated in the room also kept the fire from spreading to multiple laundry carts full of linen.

Crews spent approximately one and a half hours removing water from the room and ventilating heavy smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
