Selling SLO in the Big Apple

The city of San Luis Obispo is headed to the Big Apple, at least in advertising space. An advertising campaign for the city begins today in Times Square.

For the next week, people in Times Square will be able to look up at a giant billboard and see beautiful San Luis Obispo. The goal of this campaign, bring more tourism dollars to the city.

It has been one of the busiest and most profitable summers for Firestone Grill in downtown San Luis Obispo. “It’s definitely been our best summer. We’ve definitely seen a pickup of people. I think a lot of that is the city’s embracing tourism again a little bit,” said general manager Darnell Harris.

A new $8,000 advertising campaign in the Big Apple should help make next summer even better. “I think it’s awesome for people to get out and come visit San Luis. It’s an awesome place to come visit and let people know of all the good things we have going here,” said Harris.

It is a five-second ad that will run a 120 times through Sunday. According to a former New Yorker now living in Los Osos, that’s plenty of time. “I do think it will work. I think that a lot of, I think a lot of advertising has to be short because people are in such a hurry, especially New York where people are always on the go,” said Paul Thompson.

The ad features a couple of pictures of what the city has to offer and most importantly the city’s tourism website.

“We’re expecting around a hundred million impressions through this piece running alone for its five-second spot that will be running 120 times,” said San Luis Obispo tourism manager Molly Cano.

Not only is the city advertising in Times Square but also in Horizon Travel Magazine in the Wall Street Journal. So even more people will be able to see the advertising.
