Athletes raise funds at Cowboys’ camp

Football, baseball, track, tennis and other high school sports teams are benefiting from the Dallas Cowboys training camp in Oxnard this month and next.

High School students run the concessions stands.

It’s a sales rivalry between Port Hueneme, Oxnard, Channel Islands and Pacifica high schools.

Hueneme High Athletic Director Pablo Gallegos said they hope to make as much as $10,000, but every dollar counts.

Student athletes said the money will help them pay for uniforms and tournaments.

When the camp is closed, restaurants in the area get a financial boost.

Fans said they have seen the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and players at the new Collection dining and shopping center by the 101 freeway and Oxnard Boulevard.

Some restaurants were not allowed to comment, but others hope to cater to the players between practices.

Desha Woods hopes to see them while she stops by to shop and have lunch. Woods’ mother is a volunteer at the training camp. She said they are both big fans.

The next practice is Friday at 4 p.m.
