New Santa Maria Valley Humane Society taking shape
The new Santa Maria Valley Humane Society building project has been eight years in the making.
The new facility will more than double the amount of animals the humane society can take in.
The society has grown out of its current building on Black Road. It’s very small and they can’t house as many pets as they would like.
The construction of the new facility right around the corner on Stowell Road has slowly but surely been built.
The more than $4 million project is funded by donations and grants. That is why it has taken so long to build.
There is still more construction to be done and they are still accepting donations.
“It’s a much-needed facility. We need to expand and we don’t have the room to do that here. So we’re going to be able to bring in a lot more animals. More cats, more dogs and in doing so we get them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and get them re-homed,” said Bobbi Gilman, spokesperson for the humane society.
Originally, the hope was to open the doors to the new building by the end of this summer.
Now the hope is to open by the end of the year, as long as they have enough money to complete the project by then.
