Grant could help fund jail expansion

The Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula is surrounded by open space and agriculture.

Sheriff Geoff Dean is moving forward with a plan to apply for a grant to help pay for jail expansion plans.

Tuesday, Ventura County supervisors supported a plan to apply for the grant that would require some matching funds.

The expansions plan includes a medical unit and more than 60 beds.

Overcrowding has been a problem at jails in the wake of the state’s realignment plan.

Realignment led to longer sentences served in county jails.
