Channel Islands Boating Center programs set sail

The new Channel Islands Boating Center in the Channel Islands Harbor is giving children a place to try water sports for the first time. It’s also giving Cal State students summer jobs as camp counselors.

The center, owned by Ventura County, is being run by Cal State University Channel Islands University Glen Corporation. The university is already known for its award winning sailing team.

Student counselors are teaching one week sailing, kayaking and windsurfing programs. On Fridays, parents can join in during family day at the decks.

Programs for the public and college courses will begin later this summer.

Lengthy legal battles over birds nesting and harbor views led to its compromise location next to the Ventura County Maritime Museum on Bluefin Circle.

Both offer educational experiences for visitors.
