Potential telephone scam in Santa Barbara area

The Santa Barbara Police Department wants to warn the community about a potential telephone scam.

The scam specifically targets elderly speaking-Spanish residents. It involves a subject posing as a “water employee” for the city, advising that he needs to enter neighborhood homes to test their water quality and supply.

However, officials at the Public Works Department said the city water department in Santa Barbara is not conducting any such activity.

The SBPD suggests this circumstance could be an attempt to burglarize homes or commit other crimes.

Police encourage all residents to exercise caution when allowing strangers into their homes.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
