New airline takes flight in Santa Barbara

For travelers, an all-you-can-fly airline is convenient way to get around for one monthly price.

Surf Air is the new airline that offers members unlimited flights for $1,650 a month, plus a one-time initial fee of $500.

Marten Mickos is the CEO for Eucalyptus Systems in Goleta but lives in San Francisco.

“I commute here once a week for a day or two or three, so I really come here regularly, and I need a dependable, convenient, quick connection here,” he said.

The new airline caters to frequent flyers like Mikos, with service that’s a lot quicker and more personal than commercial flying.

“You got six people on the inside, you can socialize with everyone really easily while being comfortable. You’re not crammed in there like cattle,” said Surf Air pilot Michael Keely.

The plane is spacious and if you’re heading to San Francisco from Santa Barbara, it’s a quick one-hour flight.

Currently Surf Air has flights out of Burbank, Santa Barbara and San Carlos. The company will soon expand to other cities including Monterey, Palm Springs, San Diego and Las Vegas.

For the jet-setter, this way of travel could be a good option, especially for day trips.

“One of the comments I get the most is ‘I’m home in time for dinner,’ or ‘I get to sleep in my own bed.’ And for those guys and girls who are truly on the road all the time, going back and forth meeting clients or what have you, it’s a big deal. It’s a big improvement in your quality of life to do that,” said Surf Air CEO Wade Eyerly.

“Feels very nice, feels very different than a commercial plane and very nice service overall,” said Rick Yang on the plane headed to Santa Barbara.
