Simi fireworks show injures people 350 feet away
Two people remain in Simi Valley Hospital recovering from burns and shrapnel wounds following a professional fireworks show mishap. Another victim was taken to a burn center for special care.
More than 20 people were treated and released, including a 17-month-old. A Simi Valley police officer is also recovering after being struck in his gun belt.
Crews spent the day clearing the soccer fields at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park where the fireworks exploded. About 10,000 people were watching the show, which was canceled after nearly half the fireworks went off into the crowd rather than into the air.
Ventura County firefighters said the people were seated the required 350 feet away.
The State fire marshall plans to visit the area Tuesday to review evidence recovered from the park. The result could lead to new safety precautions.
Spectators said it was one of the scariest nights they can remember. Some said they would never return to a show at the same site; others hope the Simi Rotary Club will continue to put on the annual fireworks extravaganza.
The Rotary president would not look that far ahead. He said the current focus is on the people who got hurt.
Many neighbors thanked first responders for setting up a triage unit so quickly.
