Furlough days hit Vandenberg Air Force Base

Approximately 650,000 personnel in the Department of Defense are preparing to start furlough days. Among the civilians who will be on furlough next week are employees from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Officials for Vandenberg were unable to comment as to how this will affect the base. In a statement released on Vandenberg’s website, former 30th Space Wing Commander Nina Armagno says “Although our amazing civilian force is the backbone of all operations at Vandenberg, this furlough is necessary to minimize adverse effects to America’s premier spaceport and the near-term readiness of our Airmen. During this time, we remain focused on maintaining mission safety and protecting activities relating to life and property.”

Employees started receiving letter that they would be going on furlough for the past few weeks.

People in the Vandenberg Village worry about how it will affect civilians and the local community.

Civilian workers will be seeing a 20 percent salary cut each pay period until the end of the fiscal year. There was early talk about possibly reducing the number of furlough days, but for now the major focus is cutting spending in 2014.
